Renewal of overhead contact lines at Thun railway station
Many of the overhead contact line portal structures at Thun railway station had reached the end of their useful life. Damage to certain elements, including supports dating back to 1922, would have resulted in the closure of all main tracks and interrupted access to the Lötschberg Base Tunnel.
We therefore replaced a total of 70 masts and 30 gantries, and while we were able to leave the existing 15 kilometres of catenary system in place, we were required to perform a full readjustment. In addition, we adapted the line concept, dismantled the interior switch posts, and extended the affected section points using motorised or manually operated switches. During the conversion, temporary switchable section insulators were also installed.
